I just posted in my own blog that I haven't posted anything lately, and then I saw another deviants posting. :)
Anyone interested in joining my sci-fi/fantasy club?
We meet 6:30 PM the first thursday of each month at the University Book Shop (not the cafe area, but the seating area by the downstairs magazine racks, right by the windows facing the Ave).
We've been meeting for at least 6 years now, and here's what makes it cool- our book picking scheme. At the start of each new cycle, each member picks two books off of the rack and takes them to the group. Everyone flips through every book, and then we vote on one of your two books to make it into the next cycle. That way, everyone has a say in every book, but each person has one book that they are specifically responsible for.
Things we've done a lot of:
1. Tons of Neil Gaiman novels (I know we did Neverwhere, American Gods, Coraline and Good Omens)
2. A fair share of Neal Stephenson (Snowcrash, Zodiac, we *might* have done the Diamond Age)
3. We have one poor guy that keeps picking "Book one of the 'people riding horses' trilogy" in various forms. We love Dan.
Outrageous Fortune by Tim Scott - Jan 8 (we don't meet on holidays)
Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff - Feb 5
The Ship Who Sang - Anne McCaffery - March 5
The Eyre Affair - Jasper fforde - April 3
Soon I Will Be Invincible - Austin Grossman - May 7
As you can see, we get an interesting mix of new books, books you might have read, and occasionally "classic" stuff. This particular lineup looks to be one of the best we've done in a long, long time, so I welcome y'all to come on down. :)
